Volodymyr Podlevsky’s painting of Margrethe I and Erik of Pomerania is part of his series “Archons,” which is centered in the old city of Viborg, Denmark. The painting is deeply inspired by Viborg’s rich history, remarkable architecture, and especially the King’s Dedication Monument. The monument, created by Danish sculptor Axel Poulsen and unveiled in 1965, captures the essence of Queen Margrethe I and her nephew, King Erik of Pomerania.

Podlevsky combines the esoteric concepts of Archons and Demiurge in his work. Within Gnostic belief, Archons are seen as hidden rulers of the world, and royal figures like Margrethe and Erik are regarded as manifestations of these entities. The Demiurge, the creator of the material world, is believed to exert control through them and influence human destiny. This adds a mystical dimension to the work, suggesting that Margrethe and Erik were vessels for hidden forces.

To depict the costumes of Margrethe and Erik, along with other details, Podlevsky and the curators from SISTERS Gallery conducted extensive research in Viborg. This meticulous study ensured historical accuracy and depth. The painting reflects the historical significance of Margrethe and Erik, as well as Viborg’s role in Scandinavian medieval history, while also hinting at their possible roles as channels for greater powers.
